passes to the next treatment step. The settled biomass is returned to the treatment process to provide MO’s, which will continue removing pollutants. More specifically, when BioSol SL36 is present during this sludge digestion process, subsequent multiplication of the MO’s occurs with a bias in favour of non-pathogenic bacteria or biomass, for sustainable sludge breakdown, but also results in the generation of another product, namely compost, which can be used for cultivation purposes.

 

This returned biomass is referred to as Return Activated Sludge (RAS).

 

Since this is a living and growing process, it will continue to build biomass to the point of having too much. The amount of biomass in the process is controlled by removing (wasting) a portion of it on a controlled basis. This excess biomass removed from the secondary system is known as Waste Activated Sludge (WAS), which in fact can be used as compost.

BioSol SL36 is the natural bacteria-based product BioPower Corporation uses to treat waste systems and breaks down organic waste in pit latrines and Wastewater Treatment Works. BioSol SL36 is not a chemical based product but contains; organic carbon and free lignin in a water-soluble form. Unlike other biological products, BioSol SL36 is based on organic carbon-derived microbes instead of being enzyme/flora-based.

 

It contains the following natural elements:

 

• Organic carbon-derived microbes

• Cultured, environmentally optimised bacteria with specific abilities

• Naturally occurring nutrients that are specific to the bacteria

• Biologically treated organic liquid

 

BioSol SL36 dissolves and digests all organic waste in the waste systems, eliminates odours and keeps it odour free. In wastewater systems, the digestion process results in clean effluent, complying to such a level that it is safe to use for gardening purposes and does not contaminate ground water.

 

Most natural products on the market has limited bacterial groups / species and related sub-strains, or are flora-based enzymes (Bacteria produces enzymes that performs a specific function e.g. neutralises odours etc.). The effectiveness of an Organic Microbial Blend depends on the number and type of bacterial strains inside the blend.

 

Classification and Properties

 

The potential risks associated with the carcinogenic effects of chemical products such as Non-Biodegradable Formaldehyde are non-existent when using the BioSol SL36 organic product. To understand the uniqueness of BioSol SL36 we can summarise the following.

The following should be noted:

 

  • A complete Phylogenetic analysis has been done (results available on request)
  • A Biomonitoring analysis was done (results available on request)
  • Approval of analysis by SANAS Accredited Testing Laboratory No T0391
  • Until recently, no SABS standard on biological (as opposed to enzyme-based) sanitation products existed in South Africa. SABS, in conjunction with BioPower, CSIR and other external stakeholders have already established a task team to standardise the biological sanitation process in 2016/2017. The standard (SANS 1781) was first gazetted in August 2018.

 

The character attributes of BioSol SL36 that defines, and distinguishes this dominant product from any other imitator in the world is as follows:

BioSol SL36 was analysed in detail, in the following categories:

BioSol SL36 was found to be completely within accepted limits for all the above tests, in most cases well below (<10%) the accepted international standards.

 

Through our development in the last 8 years looking for the most efficient and cost effective organic product we encountered the following issues:

 

  • Very few strains of bacteria remove odours
  • Most natural products are enzymes and are quickly depleted
  • Most products need high volumes applied before any results are visible
  • Most bacteria only digest certain waste elements
  • Some bacteria degrade randomly making them ineffective
  • Some bacteria are in competition and destroy one another

 

The above is the reason why BioSol SL36 is such a unique product, in other words:

Though the number of bacterial species is important regarding the effectiveness of a microbial blend, even more important is the combination of species and related sub species. Bacteria in the BioSol SL 36 blend have been tailored to ensure the most efficient and effective digestion process of faecal- and other related sludge material. The fact that BioSol SL36 stays dormant until a catalyst is added, coupled with the fact that only 8% of bacteria expire in a 12-month period, means that this product is extremely effective.

BioSol SL36 is the natural bacteria-based product that BioPower Corporation uses to treat Pit Latrines in rural areas, which includes households and schools, Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) and Waste Stabilisation Ponds (WSP), as well as in the Flush-Tech Sanitation System.

 

By applying 50 ml of product into a single pit latrine each week, or by applying it in 5 parts per million ratios (dependent on the water quality) in Flush-Tech Sanitation Systems, WWTWs and WSPs, BioSol SL36 removes odours as well as digests sludge to reduce the waste level of the system.

 

BioSol SL36 works equally well in Waste Stabilisation - and Activated Sludge Systems. In the normal oxidation pond systems it works directly on the settled- and incoming sludge, whereas in the Activated Sludge process it works as follows:

 

The activated sludge process relies on the cultivation of a population of millions of micro-organisms (MO’s) of many different types, mostly aerobic and facilitative heterotrophic bacteria, such as contained in BioSol SL36, being  suspended in wastewater, as it passes through a reactor (aeration tank), as shown below:

This suspension, referred to as mixed liquor (or Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids, MLSS), is supplied with oxygen and kept mixed by bubbling air through the aeration tank. As such, the MO’s in our product enhance naturally occurring MO’s organisms already present in the primary effluent, specifically with strains of bacteria which have been optimised to rapidly degrade faecal sludge material.

 

Following an adequate amount of treatment time, the mixed liquor flows from the aeration tank to the secondary clarifier where the biomass is allowed to settle out of the wastewater and the effluent
